Genicular Artery Embolization

Genicular Artery Embolization

Genicular artery embolization (GAE) is a minimally invasive procedure that can treat knee pain caused by osteoarthritis (OA) and recurrent hemarthrosis after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). GAE reduces blood flow to the knee’s lining, or synovium, by blocking abnormal blood vessels caused by arthritis. This can help or eliminate knee pain.

Quick Relief

Minimal Recovery, Long Lasting. The GAE procedure itself usually takes about 60-90 minutes. Time in the recovery room is about 1-2 hours.

Non-surgical

GAE is a non-surgical procedure. No scalpels are involved. Treatment is delivered through a small needle puncture at the groin or near the foot.

Outpatient

GAE is done in a convenient office setting. There is no hospital stay and you will return home the same day.

Minimal Side Effects

GAE is an extremely safe procedure. Less than 30% of patients may experience temporary skin redness or irritation that goes away with time.

How is Knee OA Treated

Historically, treatment for knee OA has been:

  • Weight Management
  • Physical Therapy
  • Pain Relievers/ Medicine
  • Braces/ orthotics
  • Physical Therapy
  • Surgery

Unfortunately, many of the existing treatments provide only short-lived pain relief and don’t address the underlying issue of chronic inflammation within the affected knee joint.

If conservative treatment fails, patients are often told that knee replacement surgery is their only remaining option.

However, 5 out of 7 people seeking relief from knee pain are not suitable candidates for surgery, leaving them with no choice but to live a life with chronic pain.

Is GAE right for me?

GAE is a non-surgical option for patients with knee osteoarthritis who have failed conservative treatment, such as physical therapy, steroid or gel injections, or anti-inflammatory medications. It is an option for patients who do not wish to undergo or are ineligible for knee replacement surgery. GAE can also be performed on patients who have had a knee replacement in the past, but continue to struggle with severe knee pain.
